Hourly to Salary: Forecasting Annual Income

Instantly forecast your annual income based on your current hourly rate using our Hourly to Salary Converter, or read on to learn the math of uncompensated time.

If you are a freelancer, contractor, or hourly employee, you do not have a guaranteed annual salary. If you do not work, you do not get paid.

This makes budgeting for a mortgage or a car loan extremely difficult. To create a financial plan, you must accurately convert your fluctuating hourly wage into a reliable "Annual Salary" projection.

The Standard Calculation

The baseline formula to convert an hourly wage into an annual salary relies on the standard American work year: 2,080 hours (40 hours a week × 52 weeks).

The Formula: Hourly Rate × 2080 = Gross Annual Salary

If you make $25 an hour: $25 × 2080 = $52,000 a year.

The Mental Shortcut: To quickly estimate an hourly-to-salary conversion in your head, simply double your hourly rate and add three zeros. (Double 25 = 50. Add three zeros = $50,000. It is a very close estimate!).

The Danger of Unpaid Time Off

The 2080 formula assumes you will work 40 hours a week for 52 consecutive weeks without ever getting sick, taking a vacation, or experiencing a major holiday.

If you are an hourly worker who does not receive Paid Time Off (PTO) benefits, using the 2080 multiplier will dangerously overinflate your budget. You must calculate your Adjusted Hours.

Calculating Adjusted Hours

Let's assume a realistic year where you take two weeks of vacation, miss one week due to illness, and your office is closed for 5 standard federal holidays (which equals 1 more work week).

You are missing exactly 4 weeks of paid work. 52 weeks - 4 weeks = 48 weeks actually worked.

Now, find your Adjusted Hours: 48 weeks × 40 hours = 1,920 hours.

The Adjusted Salary Calculation

Let's run the $25/hour math again using your realistic schedule: $25 × 1920 = $48,000 a year.

By simply taking standard sick time and holidays, your actual annual income dropped by $4,000. If you had signed a lease for an apartment based on the $52,000 projection, you would be struggling to pay rent in December.

Accounting for Overtime

Conversely, if your job offers consistent overtime, the 2080 rule will severely underestimate your income.

Under the FLSA, any hours worked over 40 in a single workweek must be paid at "Time and a Half" (1.5× your base rate).

If you make $20 an hour, your standard salary projection is $41,600. If you consistently work 45 hours a week:

  • 40 hours at base rate: $20 × 40 = $800 a week.
  • 5 hours at overtime rate ($30): $30 × 5 = $150 a week.
  • Total weekly pay: $950.
  • Projected Annual Salary: $950 × 52 = $49,400.

Just 5 hours of overtime a week increased your annual salary by almost $8,000!

FAQ

Do bonuses count toward my hourly rate? No. Bonuses and commissions are considered supplemental income and should never be factored into your baseline hourly-to-salary mathematical projections. Because they are not guaranteed, relying on them for your budget is financially dangerous. Always budget based on your base pay.
