  • Years are 365 days, except leap years which are 366.
  • A "month" is not a fixed unit of time (it averages 30.436875 days).

This means that asking "how many days are in exactly 6 months?" depends entirely on which 6 months you are counting.

The Manual Calculation Method

To calculate exact age manually, you must work from the smallest unit (days) to the largest (years), "borrowing" time exactly like you borrow numbers in long subtraction.

Example Scenario

  • Birth Date: August 25, 1990
  • Current Date: March 15, 2026

Step 1: Set up the subtraction (Year - Month - Day)

  2026 - 03 - 15  (Current Date)
- 1990 - 08 - 25  (Birth Date)

Step 2: Subtract Days You cannot subtract 25 from 15. You must borrow 1 month from March. March is the 3rd month. We borrow the previous month's days (February). In 2026, February has 28 days.

  • Borrowed days: 15 + 28 = 43 days.
  • 43 - 25 = 18 Days

Step 3: Subtract Months Because we borrowed a month, March (03) becomes February (02). We cannot subtract 08 from 02. We must borrow 1 year (12 months) from 2026.

  • Borrowed months: 2 + 12 = 14 months.
  • 14 - 8 = 6 Months

Step 4: Subtract Years Because we borrowed a year, 2026 becomes 2025.

  • 2025 - 1990 = 35 Years

Final Exact Age: 35 years, 6 months, and 18 days.
