The Math of Time: How to Calculate Exact Age

Calculate your exact age down to the day, hour, and minute instantly using our Age Calculator, or read on to understand the complex mathematical rules of calendar subtraction.

Calculating your age in "Years" is incredibly easy. If you were born in 1990 and it is currently 2026, you just subtract: 2026 - 1990 = 36 years old.

However, calculating your exact age in "Years, Months, and Days" is one of the most frustrating mathematical problems in everyday life. This is because our calendar system is highly irregular. Some months have 30 days, some have 31, and February changes its length every four years!

The Right-to-Left Subtraction Method

To calculate an exact age, you must set up a subtraction problem formatted as Year - Month - Day. You must solve this problem reading strictly from right to left (Days, then Months, then Years).

Let's assume today is October 15, 2026. You were born on March 10, 1990.

Step 1: Format the equation. 2026 - 10 - 15 (Current Date) - 1990 - 03 - 10 (Birth Date)

Step 2: Subtract the Days. 15 - 10 = 5 Days.

Step 3: Subtract the Months. 10 - 3 = 7 Months.

Step 4: Subtract the Years. 2026 - 1990 = 36 Years.

Your exact age is 36 Years, 7 Months, and 5 Days. That was easy because the current numbers were all larger than the birth numbers.

The "Borrowing" Problem

What happens if the current day is smaller than your birth day? Let's assume today is May 5, 2026, and you were born on August 25, 1990.

2026 - 05 - 05 - 1990 - 08 - 25

Step 1: Subtract the Days. You cannot subtract 25 from 5. You must "borrow" a month from the Month column. The Trick: How many days are in a month? It depends on the previous month! Because the current month is May, you are borrowing the month of April. April has 30 days.

  • Add 30 days to the 5 days = 35.
  • 35 - 25 = 10 Days.

Step 2: Subtract the Months. The current month (May) was reduced from 5 to 4 because you borrowed a month. Now the problem is 4 - 8. You cannot do this. You must "borrow" a year from the Year column. The Trick: A year always has exactly 12 months.

  • Add 12 months to the 4 months = 16.
  • 16 - 8 = 8 Months.

Step 3: Subtract the Years. The current year (2026) was reduced to 2025 because you borrowed a year. 2025 - 1990 = 35 Years.

Your exact age is 35 Years, 8 Months, and 10 Days.

Why Calculating Age in Weeks is Flawed

Many parents track their newborn's age in "weeks" (e.g., "My baby is 12 weeks old"). However, an exact conversion from months to weeks is mathematically impossible because a month is not exactly 4 weeks long.

If a month were exactly 4 weeks, a year would only have 48 weeks (12 × 4 = 48). But a calendar year actually has 52 weeks. Those extra 4 weeks are scattered inconsistently across the 31-day and 30-day months. This is why doctors eventually transition from tracking age in weeks to tracking age in months once an infant reaches six months of age!
