What is the Car Calculator?

The sticker price is the least interesting number in a car purchase. What matters is the price on the day you actually buy, the down payment you will have saved by then, and the monthly loan payment after that. This planner connects all three stages. It inflates the Current Car Price ($) by your Annual Car Inflation (%) over the Years until Purchase, sizes the Down Payment (%) you will need, then works out the monthly savings required to hit it — and finally the Monthly Auto Loan Payment ($) on the remaining Auto Loan Amount ($) at your Auto Loan Rate (%) over the Auto Loan Term (years).

Say you want a car priced at $35,000 today and plan to buy in 3 years with 6% annual price inflation. The future price lands near $41,700, so a 20% down payment means saving about $8,340. At a 10% expected return on savings, that is roughly $200 a month. Financing the remaining $33,360 over 5 years at 8% leaves a monthly payment near $676.

Run the numbers before you fall for the car. If the monthly savings target feels impossible, push the purchase date out a year — time is the cheapest discount available.

With the pre-filled defaults — Current Car Price ($) 35,000, Years until Purchase 3, Down Payment (%) 20, Savings Expected Return (%) 7, Auto Loan Term (years) 5, Auto Loan Rate (APR %) 7, Annual Car Inflation (%) 3 — the Car Calculator returns Future Car Price ($) 38,245.45, Future Down Payment Needed ($) 7,649.09, Monthly Savings for Down Payment ($) 190.45, Auto Loan Amount ($) 30,596.36, Monthly Auto Loan Payment ($) 605.84. Change any input and those results update instantly, so you can see exactly how each number you enter moves the answer.

Calculation Progression Roadmap

How the Car Calculator turns your inputs into a result, step by step — from the values you type to the answer you read.

01

Gather your inputs

Type in your Current Car Price ($), Years until Purchase, Down Payment (%), Savings Expected Return (%), Auto Loan Term (years), Auto Loan Rate (APR %), and Annual Car Inflation (%). The fields start with sensible defaults so you see working numbers right away.

02

Sanity-check your numbers

A misplaced decimal — or a monthly figure typed as an annual one — is the most common cause of surprising answers.

03

The math runs itself

The calculator evaluates Future Car Price ($) - Future Down Payment Needed ($) on every keystroke — there is no submit button to press.

04

Read your results

Your Future Car Price ($), Future Down Payment Needed ($), Monthly Savings for Down Payment ($), Auto Loan Amount ($), and Monthly Auto Loan Payment ($) appear instantly. With the pre-filled defaults, that is Future Car Price ($) 38,245.45, Future Down Payment Needed ($) 7,649.09, Monthly Savings for Down Payment ($) 190.45, Auto Loan Amount ($) 30,596.36, Monthly Auto Loan Payment ($) 605.84. Change any input to see the effect immediately.

05

Test a what-if

Try a bigger and a smaller value for one input. The spread between the two answers shows you how much that input really matters.
