What is the Loan Calculator?

Borrowing money is simple; understanding what it costs is not. This is the workhorse calculator for any amortizing loan — personal, auto, or mortgage — reducing it to three inputs and the truth. Enter the Loan Amount, the Annual Rate, and the Loan Term in years, and the standard amortization formula returns your Monthly Payment: principal times the monthly rate times (1 + monthly rate) to the power of total payments, divided by that same power minus one. The Total Payment and Total Interest Paid complete the picture.

Borrow $25,000 for a used car at 7% over 5 years. The monthly payment is about $495 — easy to say yes to. The total interest, though, is roughly $4,700, meaning the car costs $29,700 all-in. Now try 3 years instead: $771 a month, but only about $2,760 in interest. You save nearly $2,000 by enduring the higher payment for a shorter stretch.

Use this as your pre-commitment ritual. If a lender's quoted payment differs from this math, something is hiding in the quote — find it before you sign.

With the pre-filled defaults — Loan Amount $250,000, Annual Rate 6.5%, Loan Term 20 — the Loan Calculator returns Monthly Monthly Payment $1,863.93, Total Payment $447,343.88, Total Interest Paid $197,343.88. Change any input and those results update instantly, so you can see exactly how each number you enter moves the answer.

How to Use the Loan Calculator

  1. 1Enter the Loan Amount — for example, $25,000.
  2. 2Type the Annual Rate, such as 7.
  3. 3Set the Loan Term in years — the field accepts years, so enter 5 for a 60-month loan.
  4. 4Read your Monthly EMI and sanity-check it against the lender's quote.
  5. 5Glance at Total Interest Paid; if it shocks you, shorten the term and re-run.

Formula

EMI = P × r(1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n-1)

This is the core equation the Loan Calculator uses to calculate results. Enter values in the calculator above to see it in action.

Calculation Progression Roadmap

How the Loan Calculator turns your inputs into a result, step by step — from the values you type to the answer you read.

01

Gather your inputs

Type in your Loan Amount, Annual Rate, and Loan Term. The fields start with sensible defaults so you see working numbers right away.

02

Match your units

Pick the unit that matches each number you have — the calculator converts behind the scenes, no conversion factors to look up.

03

The math runs itself

The calculator evaluates Loan Amount × (Annual Rate ÷ 1200) × (1 + Annual Rate ÷ 1200)^(Loan Term) ÷ ((1 + Annual Rate ÷ 1200)^(Loan Term) - 1) on every keystroke — there is no submit button to press.

04

Read your results

Your Monthly Monthly Payment, Total Payment, and Total Interest Paid appear instantly. With the pre-filled defaults, that is Monthly Monthly Payment $1,863.93, Total Payment $447,343.88, Total Interest Paid $197,343.88. Change any input to see the effect immediately.

05

Test a what-if

Change a single input and watch which outputs move. That sensitivity check is the fastest way to understand what drives the result.
