What is the Topology Calculator?

A coffee mug and a donut are the same shape — at least to a topologist. Topology studies what survives stretching and squishing without tearing, and its favorite invariant is the Euler characteristic: χ = V − E + F (vertices minus edges plus faces). A cube has 8 − 12 + 6 = 2, and so does a soccer ball, because neither has holes. Punch a hole through and the number drops: for a surface with g holes, χ = 2 − 2g, so a donut (one hole) has χ = 0 and a pretzel (three holes) has χ = −4.

The hole-counting step is a clean multiplication: 2 × g. Type 2 in the Variable A box and the number of holes in the Variable B box, and the Result box shows 2g — subtract it from 2 for the Euler characteristic. A coffee mug (one handle-hole) gives 2 × 1 = 2, so χ = 0, confirming the mug really is a donut. Network designers and 3D modelers use the same invariant to check that a mesh has no rips or unintended tunnels.

With the pre-filled defaults — Variable A 10, Variable B 5 — the Topology Calculator returns Result 50.0000. Change any input and those results update instantly, so you can see exactly how each number you enter moves the answer.

How to Use the Topology Calculator

  1. 1Count the holes (the genus g) in your surface — for example, 1 for a coffee mug's handle.
  2. 2Type 2 in the Variable A box and the hole count in the Variable B box.
  3. 3Read the Result box: 2 × 1 = 2, twice the genus.
  4. 4Subtract the Result from 2: 2 − 2 = 0, the Euler characteristic of the mug.
  5. 5Verify with a cube: 0 holes gives Result 0, so χ = 2 — matching 8 − 12 + 6.
  6. 6Remember handles, tunnels, and through-holes all count; dents and dimples do not.

Show Answer
With Variable A 10, Variable B 5, the results are Result 50.0000.

Calculation Progression Roadmap

How the Topology Calculator turns your inputs into a result, step by step — from the values you type to the answer you read.

01

Gather your inputs

Type in your Variable A and Variable B. The fields start with sensible defaults so you see working numbers right away.

02

Sanity-check your numbers

Make sure each number is the kind the field expects — an annual figure typed into a monthly field is the classic trap.

03

The math runs itself

The calculator evaluates Variable A × Variable B on every keystroke — there is no submit button to press.

04

Read your results

Your Result appears instantly. With the pre-filled defaults, that is Result 50.0000. Change any input to see the effect immediately.

05

Test a what-if

Nudge one input up or down. Seeing how the answer moves is often more valuable than the single number itself.

Real-World Examples

Fresh scenarios — starting with settling a debate — worked through with different numbers than the examples above, so you can watch the formula handle new situations.

1

Settling a debate

With Variable A 20, Variable B 5, the calculator returns Result 100.0000.

2

Quick mental-math verify

Plug in Variable A 5, Variable B 5 and you get Result 25.0000.

3

Class assignment

Enter Variable A 15, Variable B 5 — the answer comes out to Result 75.0000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Vertices minus edges plus faces (χ = V − E + F) — a number that stays fixed no matter how you stretch the shape. For a surface with g holes it equals 2 − 2g, and the calculator computes the 2g part.
