What is the Half Life Calculator?

The iodine-131 a doctor gives a thyroid patient is half gone in 8 days — hot enough to treat, short-lived enough to be safe within weeks. That predictable halving is the half-life: the time for half the atoms in any sample to decay. The remaining amount follows N = N₀ × (1/2)^(t / t½) — after one half-life half remains, after two a quarter, after three an eighth, marching down the powers of two.

Half-lives span the absurd. Francium-223 lasts 22 minutes; carbon-14 lasts 5,730 years, which is why archaeologists date ancient charcoal with it; uranium-238 lasts 4.5 billion years, which is why the Earth is still warm inside. Smoke detectors cheat beautifully with americium-241's 432-year half-life — so long the radiation barely changes over the device's life.

This calculator multiplies out the decay. Type the starting amount in the Variable A box — grams, atoms, or becquerels — and the remaining fraction (1/2)^(t/t½) in the Variable B box: 0.5 after one half-life, 0.25 after two, 0.125 after three. The Result box gives what is left. A 100-microcurie iodine dose is down to 12.5 microcuries after 24 days — three half-lives, three halvings.

With the pre-filled defaults — Variable A 10, Variable B 5 — the Half Life Calculator returns Result 50.0000. Change any input and those results update instantly, so you can see exactly how each number you enter moves the answer.

How to Use the Half Life Calculator

  1. 1Type the starting amount in the Variable A box — for example, 100 for 100 microcuries.
  2. 2Count the elapsed half-lives and pick the fraction: 0.5 for one, 0.25 for two, 0.125 for three.
  3. 3Type that fraction in the Variable B box.
  4. 4Read the Result box: 100 × 0.125 = 12.5 microcuries left after three half-lives in this example.
  5. 5For partial half-lives, compute (1/2)^(t/t½) with a scientific calculator first.
  6. 6Remember each half-life halves whatever remains — the drops get smaller but never quite reach zero.

Calculation Progression Roadmap

How the Half Life Calculator turns your inputs into a result, step by step — from the values you type to the answer you read.

01

Gather your inputs

Type in your Variable A and Variable B. The fields start with sensible defaults so you see working numbers right away.

02

Sanity-check your numbers

Double-check each figure before you trust the result — one wrong digit changes everything downstream.

03

The math runs itself

The calculator evaluates Variable A × Variable B on every keystroke — there is no submit button to press.

04

Read your results

Your Result appears instantly. With the pre-filled defaults, that is Result 50.0000. Change any input to see the effect immediately.

05

Test a what-if

Change a single input and watch which outputs move. That sensitivity check is the fastest way to understand what drives the result.

Real-World Examples

Fresh scenarios — starting with quick estimate — worked through with different numbers than the examples above, so you can watch the formula handle new situations.

1

Quick estimate

Plug in Variable A 20, Variable B 5 and you get Result 100.0000.

2

Class assignment

Enter Variable A 5, Variable B 5 — the answer comes out to Result 25.0000.

3

Lab calculation

For Variable A 15, Variable B 5, expect Result 75.0000.
