What is the Confidence Interval Calculator?
A poll that reports "47% approve, margin of error ±3 points" is really making two claims: a best guess and an honesty zone around it. That zone is the confidence interval — the range where the true value probably sits. A 95% confidence interval means that if you repeated the poll 100 times, about 95 of those intervals would capture the real number. It does not mean there is a 95% chance the truth is inside this particular interval, though that is how most people read it.
The width comes from three ingredients: the sample mean, the sample standard deviation, and the sample size, combined as x̄ ± z* × (s / √n). Bigger samples shrink the interval — quadrupling respondents halves the margin — while more confidence (99% instead of 95%) widens it, because you need a bigger net to be surer of the catch.
This calculator builds the interval from your four inputs: the Sample Mean (x̄), the Sample Standard Deviation (s), the Sample Size (n), and your chosen Z* critical value (1.96 for 95% confidence, 2.576 for 99%). A restaurant owner who surveyed 64 customers with an average rating of 4.2 and a standard deviation of 0.8 gets 4.2 ± 0.196 — a true rating plausibly between 4.0 and 4.4.
With the pre-filled defaults — Sample Mean (x̄) 50, Sample Standard Deviation (s) 10, Sample Size (n) 30, Z* (1.96 for 95%) 1.96 — the Confidence Interval Calculator returns Margin of Error 3.5785, Lower Bound 46.4215, Upper Bound 53.5785, Interval Width 7.1569. Change any input and those results update instantly, so you can see exactly how each number you enter moves the answer.
How to Use the Confidence Interval Calculator
- 1Type your sample's average into the Sample Mean (x̄) box.
- 2Type the spread of your sample into the Sample Standard Deviation (s) box.
- 3Type how many observations you collected into the Sample Size (n) box.
- 4Enter your critical value in the Z* box — 1.96 for 95% confidence or 2.576 for 99%.
- 5Read the lower and upper bounds of your confidence interval from the results.
- 6Increase the Sample Size (n) and watch the interval narrow — more data means more precision.

Calculation Progression Roadmap
How the Confidence Interval Calculator turns your inputs into a result, step by step — from the values you type to the answer you read.
Gather your inputs
Type in your Sample Mean (x̄), Sample Standard Deviation (s), Sample Size (n), and Z* (1.96 for 95%). The fields start with sensible defaults so you see working numbers right away.
Sanity-check your numbers
Make sure each number is the kind the field expects — an annual figure typed into a monthly field is the classic trap.
The math runs itself
The calculator evaluates Z × (1.96 for 95%) × Sample Standard Deviation (s) ÷ √(Sample Size (n)) on every keystroke — there is no submit button to press.
Read your results
Your Margin of Error, Lower Bound, Upper Bound, and Interval Width appear instantly. With the pre-filled defaults, that is Margin of Error 3.5785, Lower Bound 46.4215, Upper Bound 53.5785, Interval Width 7.1569. Change any input to see the effect immediately.
Test a what-if
Nudge one input up or down. Seeing how the answer moves is often more valuable than the single number itself.
Real-World Examples
Fresh scenarios — starting with class project — worked through with different numbers than the examples above, so you can watch the formula handle new situations.
Class project
Enter Sample Mean (x̄) 100, Sample Standard Deviation (s) 10, Sample Size (n) 30, Z* (1.96 for 95%) 1.96 — the answer comes out to Margin of Error 3.5785, Lower Bound 96.4215, Upper Bound 103.5785, Interval Width 7.1569.
Summarizing survey data
For Sample Mean (x̄) 25, Sample Standard Deviation (s) 10, Sample Size (n) 30, Z* (1.96 for 95%) 1.96, expect Margin of Error 3.5785, Lower Bound 21.4215, Upper Bound 28.5785, Interval Width 7.1569.
Checking an assignment
A quick run with Sample Mean (x̄) 75, Sample Standard Deviation (s) 10, Sample Size (n) 30, Z* (1.96 for 95%) 1.96 gives Margin of Error 3.5785, Lower Bound 71.4215, Upper Bound 78.5785, Interval Width 7.1569.
