What is the Probability Calculator?
Every weather forecast, dice roll, and lottery ticket is a probability problem wearing casual clothes. The basic rule never changes: probability equals favorable outcomes divided by total outcomes. A standard deck holds 52 cards with 4 aces, so drawing an ace is 4 ÷ 52, about 7.7%. Roll a die hoping for a six: 1 favorable outcome out of 6, about 16.7%.
Probabilities always live between 0 (impossible) and 1 (certain), often shown as percentages. Two rules keep the arithmetic honest: the chance of something NOT happening is 1 minus the chance it happens, and for independent events — like consecutive coin flips — you multiply the individual chances. Three heads in a row is ½ × ½ × ½ = 12.5%, which is why "due for heads" after two tails is a fallacy.
This calculator handles the fundamental case. Enter the count of outcomes you want in Favorable Outcomes and the count of all possible outcomes in Total Outcomes, and it returns the probability as a decimal and a percentage.
With the pre-filled defaults — Favorable Outcomes 3, Total Outcomes 10 — the Probability Calculator returns Probability P(A) 0.300000, Percentage (%) 30.0000, Complement P(not A) 0.700000, Odds (for:against) 0.4286. Change any input and those results update instantly, so you can see exactly how each number you enter moves the answer.
How to Use the Probability Calculator
- 1Count the outcomes you are hoping for and type the number in the Favorable Outcomes box.
- 2Count every possible outcome and type it in the Total Outcomes box.
- 3Read the probability: favorable ÷ total, shown as a decimal and a percentage.
- 4For 'at least one' problems, compute 1 minus the probability of none — it is usually easier.
- 5For multi-step events, multiply the step probabilities — but only if the steps are independent.
- 6Sanity-check: the answer must sit between 0% and 100%; anything else means a counting mistake.

Common Examples
| Scenario | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 3 out of 10 | Favorable Outcomes = 3, Total Outcomes = 10 | Probability P(A) = 0.300000; Percentage (%) = 30.0000; Complement P(not A) = 0.700000; Odds (for:against) = 0.4286 |
| Die roll - getting 1 | Favorable Outcomes = 1, Total Outcomes = 6 | Probability P(A) = 0.166667; Percentage (%) = 16.6667; Complement P(not A) = 0.833333; Odds (for:against) = 0.2000 |

Calculation Progression Roadmap
How the Probability Calculator turns your inputs into a result, step by step — from the values you type to the answer you read.
Gather your inputs
Type in your Favorable Outcomes and Total Outcomes. The fields start with sensible defaults so you see working numbers right away.
Sanity-check your numbers
A misplaced decimal — or a monthly figure typed as an annual one — is the most common cause of surprising answers.
The math runs itself
The calculator evaluates Favorable Outcomes ÷ Total Outcomes on every keystroke — there is no submit button to press.
Read your results
Your Probability P(A), Percentage (%), Complement P(not A), and Odds (for:against) appear instantly. With the pre-filled defaults, that is Probability P(A) 0.300000, Percentage (%) 30.0000, Complement P(not A) 0.700000, Odds (for:against) 0.4286. Change any input to see the effect immediately.
Test a what-if
Try a bigger and a smaller value for one input. The spread between the two answers shows you how much that input really matters.
Real-World Examples
Fresh scenarios — starting with experiment results — worked through with different numbers than the examples above, so you can watch the formula handle new situations.
Experiment results
Plug in Favorable Outcomes 6, Total Outcomes 10 and you get Probability P(A) 0.600000, Percentage (%) 60.0000, Complement P(not A) 0.400000, Odds (for:against) 1.5000.
Class project
Enter Favorable Outcomes 2, Total Outcomes 10 — the answer comes out to Probability P(A) 0.200000, Percentage (%) 20.0000, Complement P(not A) 0.800000, Odds (for:against) 0.2500.
Summarizing survey data
For Favorable Outcomes 5, Total Outcomes 10, expect Probability P(A) 0.500000, Percentage (%) 50.0000, Complement P(not A) 0.500000, Odds (for:against) 1.0000.
