What is the Stem and Leaf Plot Generator?
Before computers, statisticians sketched data distributions by hand — and the stem-and-leaf plot was their pencil of choice. It splits each number into a "stem" (the leading digits) and a "leaf" (the final digit), then stacks the leaves in rows. Sprint times of 11.2, 11.5, 11.7, 12.1, and 12.4 seconds become two rows — stem 11 with leaves 2, 5, 7, and stem 12 with leaves 1, 4 — a histogram you can read the original values back out of. No information is lost, which is its charm and its limit.
Coaches, teachers, and quality inspectors still reach for it with small datasets because it shows shape and values simultaneously. A track coach sees at a glance that most sprinters cluster at 11 seconds with a couple trailing at 12 — the distribution's story and every data point in one sketch.
This calculator builds the plot from up to five values. Type each into Value 1 through Value 5 under Dataset, and it returns the stems with their leaves plus summary statistics — the quick hand-drawn view, computed instantly.
With the pre-filled defaults — Value 1 23, Value 2 35, Value 3 42, Value 4 58, Value 5 61 — the Stem and Leaf Plot Generator returns Stem | Leaf (n1) 2, Leaf (n1) 3, Stem | Leaf (n2) 3, Leaf (n2) 5, Stem | Leaf (n3) 4, Leaf (n3) 2, Stem | Leaf (n4) 5, Leaf (n4) 8, Stem | Leaf (n5) 6, Leaf (n5) 1, Minimum 23.00, Maximum 61.00, Mean 43.8000, Range 38.00. Change any input and those results update instantly, so you can see exactly how each number you enter moves the answer.
How to Use the Stem and Leaf Plot Generator
- 1Type your first measurement in the Value 1 box under Dataset.
- 2Continue with Value 2 through Value 5.
- 3Read the Stems & Leaves output: each stem row with its leaves in order.
- 4Check the shape — leaves piling on one stem means clustering; a lone leaf far away is an outlier.
- 5Read the summary statistics for the mean and spread alongside the plot.
- 6For two-digit numbers, the stem is the tens digit and each leaf is the ones digit.
