What is the Hours Calculator?

Shift workers know the pain of adding up start times, end times, and lunch breaks. This calculator takes a start hour and minute, an end hour and minute, and subtracts any break time to give you total minutes, total hours, and net hours after the break. No more counting on fingers across the noon boundary or wondering whether 9-to-5:30 with a 30-minute lunch is really 8 hours (it is).

A barista in Portland clocking in at 9:00 a.m., out at 5:30 p.m., with a 30-minute lunch types it in and gets 510 total minutes, 8.5 total hours, and 8.0 net hours. Those net hours are the ones that matter for pay, and having them computed removes the most common timesheet error — forgetting the break or subtracting it twice. The calculator handles overnight-spanning shifts in 24-hour time too, as long as start and end are entered correctly.

It computes raw elapsed time, not pay: no overtime multipliers, no rounding rules, no shift differentials. Employers round clock times per their own policies (usually to the nearest quarter hour), so confirm how your workplace handles the minutes before disputing a stub.

With the pre-filled defaults — Start Hour (0-23) 9, Start Minute (0-59) 0, End Hour (0-23) 17, End Minute (0-59) 30, Break Time (minutes) 30 — the Hours Calculator returns Total Minutes (with break) 510, Total Hours 8.5000, Net Hours (after break) 8.0000. Change any input and those results update instantly, so you can see exactly how each number you enter moves the answer.

How to Use the Hours Calculator

  1. 1Type your start time in the Start Hour (0-23) and Start Minute (0-59) fields — 9 and 0 for 9:00 a.m.
  2. 2Type your end time in the End Hour (0-23) and End Minute (0-59) fields — 17 and 30 for 5:30 p.m.
  3. 3Enter unpaid time off the clock in the Break Time (minutes) field, for example 30.
  4. 4Read Total Hours and Total Minutes (with break) for the raw shift length.
  5. 5Use Net Hours (after break) as your payable-hours figure.

Q1

9 AM to 5:30 PM, 30 min break: You enter Start Hour (0-23) 9, Start Minute (0-59) 0, End Hour (0-23) 17, End Minute (0-59) 30, Break Time (minutes) 30 — what does the calculator return?

Show Answer
With Start Hour (0-23) 9, Start Minute (0-59) 0, End Hour (0-23) 17, End Minute (0-59) 30, Break Time (minutes) 30, the results are Total Minutes (with break) 510, Total Hours 8.5000, Net Hours (after break) 8.0000.
Q2

With Start Hour (0-23) 10, Start Minute (0-59) 0, End Hour (0-23) 16, End Minute (0-59) 0, Break Time (minutes) 60, what are the results?

Show Answer
Entering Start Hour (0-23) 10, Start Minute (0-59) 0, End Hour (0-23) 16, End Minute (0-59) 0, Break Time (minutes) 60 gives Total Minutes (with break) 360, Total Hours 6.0000, Net Hours (after break) 5.0000.

Calculation Progression Roadmap

How the Hours Calculator turns your inputs into a result, step by step — from the values you type to the answer you read.

01

Gather your inputs

Type in your Start Hour (0-23), Start Minute (0-59), End Hour (0-23), End Minute (0-59), and Break Time (minutes). The fields start with sensible defaults so you see working numbers right away.

02

Sanity-check your numbers

Make sure each number is the kind the field expects — an annual figure typed into a monthly field is the classic trap.

03

The math runs itself

The calculator evaluates (End Hour (0-23) × 60 + End Minute (0-59)) - (Start Hour (0-23) × 60 + Start Minute (0-59)) on every keystroke — there is no submit button to press.

04

Read your results

Your Total Minutes (with break), Total Hours, and Net Hours (after break) appear instantly. With the pre-filled defaults, that is Total Minutes (with break) 510, Total Hours 8.5000, Net Hours (after break) 8.0000. Change any input to see the effect immediately.

05

Test a what-if

Nudge one input up or down. Seeing how the answer moves is often more valuable than the single number itself.

Real-World Examples

Fresh scenarios — starting with planning a trip — worked through with different numbers than the examples above, so you can watch the formula handle new situations.

1

Planning a trip

A quick run with Start Hour (0-23) 18, Start Minute (0-59) 0, End Hour (0-23) 17, End Minute (0-59) 30, Break Time (minutes) 30 gives Total Minutes (with break) -30, Total Hours -0.5000, Net Hours (after break) -1.0000.

2

Converting a timestamp

With Start Hour (0-23) 5, Start Minute (0-59) 0, End Hour (0-23) 17, End Minute (0-59) 30, Break Time (minutes) 30, the calculator returns Total Minutes (with break) 750, Total Hours 12.5000, Net Hours (after break) 12.0000.

3

Coordinating across zones

Plug in Start Hour (0-23) 14, Start Minute (0-59) 0, End Hour (0-23) 17, End Minute (0-59) 30, Break Time (minutes) 30 and you get Total Minutes (with break) 210, Total Hours 3.5000, Net Hours (after break) 3.0000.
